As leaders, we are always trying to figure out what we should do next.
There’s always another fire to put out, another problem to solve and another plan to be developed. Even when we get caught up with one thing, we are behind in another. In order to compete in this new economy, we have to be ahead, not just caught up.
But as a result, some basic goals get ignored. Where do we find time to do the basics, such as getting to know our employees at work, taking a small client out to lunch or even reading the morning paper?
No matter what size company you run, if you have gotten away from the basics, you have drifted from center. Center is defined as keeping a perfect balance between you and all the variables, such as your employees and customers. You need this balance for long-term success, even if you have short-term profitability and growth.
Here are some ways to keep your balance.
1. Put a greater value on your people than on the bottom line. Focus on getting the right people, then encourage and reward them. The bottom-line results will come naturally to companies built on a foundation of talent and respect.
2. Enjoy the basics of running a business, including the freedom it provides. Delegate to people so that you can take the time to build relationships with people throughout the organization to gain a better understanding of how your business functions at every level.
3. Use your influence for the good of others. Help people in your organization advance in their careers. Help people in your community who are less fortunate. Helping others in whatever way you can gives further meaning to you and your company.
4. Take time to smell the roses. Celebrate your successes. Enjoy holidays, landing a new client or getting an award. There will always be problems to overcome, but don’t forget to enjoy the good things. Stay positive and don’t dwell on the negatives.
Sometimes we are taskmasters and great at doing things, but when it comes to “being,” we are fish out of water. Take the time to enjoy the basics in life, both at home and in your business, and you’ll find achieving your goals to be a much more rewarding experience.
