About Smart Business
For nearly 25 years, Smart Business Magazines, Events and Books has produced the highest-quality content, events and marketing materials for our diverse audience of entrepreneurs and senior executives.
How do we do this? We highlight CEOs and senior executives who achieve success and demonstrate innovative leadership. But we’re not like traditional business publishers. Instead of focusing on the who, what, where and when in business, we home in on how and why smart leaders get the job done.
At Smart Business, we talk to the country's leading CEOs to discover how they made it to the top and offer their advice on how other leaders can do the same. By delivering this valuable insight, advice and strategy, we help business leaders take their organizations to the top and, just as important, stay there.
What we do
In addition to the articles you’ll find in our award-winning Smart Business magazine, we offer numerous networking, awards and educational business events, as well as a full-service books division that brings the stories of CEOs to life in a whole new way.
Smart Business Magazine is a national chain of business management journals that offers insight, advice and strategy for C-level executives. Together, our 17 regional publications have featured more than 27,000 of the nation’s top CEOs, from Ted Turner to Mark Cuban, and received repeated accolades for journalistic excellence. Learn more.

Learn more about SBN Interactive.
Smart Business Network was co-founded in 1989 by President and CEO Fred Koury. He set up operations in a one-room office in Rocky River, Ohio, and started publishing a 16-page publication every other month, originally serving small businesses on the West Side of Cleveland.
From the beginning, the editorial focus of Smart Business Network’s publications was unique. Where traditional business publications reported on the news of large companies and entire industries, Smart Business Network focused instead on helping the owners and managers of smaller companies survive and prosper. Our rapid growth began with our unique editorial content and aggressive sales team.
The publication caught on quickly, adding both large and small companies as advertisers. In late 1989, Smart Business Network began publishing monthly issues, and the network quickly expanded to 17 magazines, with a new focus on the middle market, garnering the attention of The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. More and more businesses found the combination of quality articles, affordable advertising rates and aggressive promotion a compelling reason to become loyal clients. Some of the nation’s top CEOs, including Wayne Huizenga, Bill Ford Jr. and Les Wexner were soon featured on the cover of Smart Business Magazine.
As our markets and clients have adapted to embrace new technologies and platforms for growth, we’ve adapted with them by enhancing our offerings to meet their present-day needs. Propelling this evolution was the acquisition of a custom content firm, a full-service multimedia company and a full-service e-marketing services company, which allowed us to launch our own interactive, content-driven marketing firm, SBN Interactive, in 2012.
Combining nearly 25 years in content development and established expertise in web, mobile, print, video and live marketing, SBN Interactive drives measurable business results for companies by putting world-class content at the core of every customer engagement.
Today, Smart Business Network boasts clients such as Avery Dennison, Cleveland Clinic, RPM, PNC Bank, Ernst & Young and Assurex Global, and also has thriving books and events divisions. Moving forward, we will continue to grow by focusing on what sets us apart — quality content — and acquiring talented people and businesses that deepen our value proposition for clients.
