FINALIST – Technology
Jim McCluney
CEO
Emulex
Emulex has come a long way from its start 30 years ago, diversifying product and making strategic acquisitions to adapt to and survive changes in the technology industry.
With the acquisition of Vixel Corp. in 2003, Emulex obtained perhaps its most valuable asset — its current president and CEO, Jim McCluney.
Since taking the reins of the Costa Mesa, Calif.-based converged networking solutions provider, McCluney has been instrumental in formulating Emulex’s strategy for growth and executing on strategic acquisitions.
McCluney invests in cutting-edge technology and acquisitions that expand upon the company’s existing services — providing enterprise-class connectivity for servers, networks and storage devices within the data center.
In 2011, Emulex introduced the Emulex Engine XE201 I/O Controller — the industry’s first quad-port converged fabric controller unifying Fibre Channel and Ethernet.
The company also introduced OneCommand Vision, its first software offering and the industry’s first I/O management tool that proactively monitors I/O from the application’s perspective, providing a global view of I/O availability and performance.
Additionally, McCluney has led three key acquisitions — ServerEngines, Aarohi Communications and Sierra Logic — which have positioned Emulex for entry into new high-growth market areas, such as Ethernet networking.
The rising company grew 14 percent in 2011, achieving the largest year-over-year share gain in 10GbE-based revenue that same year.
Emulex also continues to lead in the 10GbE LAN on Motherboard (LOM) market.
Emulex solutions are used and offered by the industry’s leading server and storage OEMs, including Apple, Cisco, Dell, HP, IBM and Samsung, among others.
The company has offices and research facilities in North America, Asia and Europe, employing more than 900 people.
