Carolyn Duronio started her law career in the early 1980s, when women were something of a rarity in the profession.

Women still make up only about one-fifth of the partners at Pittsburgh's top law firms, but Duronio is continuing to break ground and help women become less of a novelty in the profession's management as well as at the partner and associate levels.

When Reed Smith decided to restructure the management of its offices in a dozen cities, it chose Duronio as managing partner for its Pittsburgh and Harrisburg offices.

Duronio started out as a tax lawyer, but her forte is in representing nonprofit entities, and she has extensive experience representing such clients before the IRS and in the federal courts.

A significant aspect of her practice is charitable contribution issues, such as planned giving and other issues of interest to development professionals, and she has spoken extensively on these.

And consistent with her professional practice, she serves on the boards of First Night Pittsburgh and The Rebecca Residence. In 2001, she served on the board of the United Way.
