Born: Orrville, Ohio

First job: Sweeping the floors at Smith Dairy on Saturdays as a kid. Smith dairy is a family business, and I’m part of the family. As I grew up as a kid, I would come down on Saturdays and help out.

Education: B.A., College of Wooster; master’s in business, University of Michigan

What has been your most difficult leadership challenge?

Building a vision for sales and the future. That’s always a tough one, especially in the dairy industry.

What has been your greatest leadership lesson?

Trusting other good people to do a good job. They can and will do a better job than I’ll do. It’s fun to delegate and get out of the way — delegating and letting people do their job — granted there needs to be some leadership and some directions and things like that.

Schmid on leadership: If I don’t delegate, then I have to do everything, and I can’t.
