Born: Orrville, Ohio
First job: Sweeping the floors at Smith Dairy on Saturdays as a kid. Smith dairy is a family business, and I’m part of the family. As I grew up as a kid, I would come down on Saturdays and help out.
Education: B.A., College of Wooster; master’s in business, University of Michigan
What has been your most difficult leadership challenge?
Building a vision for sales and the future. That’s always a tough one, especially in the dairy industry.
What has been your greatest leadership lesson?
Trusting other good people to do a good job. They can and will do a better job than I’ll do. It’s fun to delegate and get out of the way delegating and letting people do their job granted there needs to be some leadership and some directions and things like that.
Schmid on leadership: If I don’t delegate, then I have to do everything, and I can’t.
