Two Western Pennsylvania businesses have teamed with a Pittsburgh artist to create sculptures that hang in shopping malls in Indiana and South Carolina.
Elena Hiatt Houlihan was commissioned by the Jacobs Group, a Cleveland developer and the fifth-largest owner of shopping malls in the United States, to create mobile sculptures for the center courts at the SouthLake Mall in Merrillville, Ind., and the Citadel Mall in Charleston, S.C.
The sculptures are part of major renovations at both malls.
The abstracted wing and floral shapes that make up the sculptures are composed of perforated aluminum, and each piece weighs about 35 pounds. The shapes were cut, rolled and shaped by James E. Roth Inc. a sheet metal shop in Cranberry Township. Guy Palermo Auto Body, a Cranberry shop noted for the specialty painting of motorcycles and custom restoration of vintage vehicles, performed the paint work on the sculptures.
