In the midst of a recession and a housing crisis, J. David Heller has continued to grow The NRP Group LLC, and that growth shows no signs of letting up.

Since its founding in 1995, the development and management company has focused on providing housing for those with modest means. Under Heller’s leadership, the company — a full-service developer, general contractor and property manager — has experienced much of its growth in single-family, multifamily and senior housing by changing the stigma associated with affordable housing.

Heller and his team have dealt with the challenges that urban and inner cities face when it comes to housing, such as titles and financing. But the company’s creation of NRP Management in 2003 was the catalyst for its growth. Since then, more than 13,500 multifamily and single-family units have been built, with another 2,275 planned in 2010. By year’s end, NRP Management — Neighborhood Revitalization Partners LLC — will manage 70 properties encompassing more than 7,5000 apartment properties in eight states.

NRP plans to continue capitalizing on its strengths and core competencies as the country emerges from the recession. To do that, Heller has developed a diversification approach that will make housing 50 percent of NRP’s annual construction market rate with the goal of diversifying the company in order to reduce potential market exposure.

To spark innovation and growth, Heller has also led the company to expansion outside of the Cleveland area. NRP now has regional offices in Texas, Arizona and North Carolina and continues to break ground in new markets. NRP is bringing its concept to new areas by developing strong relationships with nonprofits, public housing authorities and developers, and those relationships have led to collaborations on project after project.

Heller knew he always wanted to be an entrepreneur and leave his mark on the world, and he has done so by following four key principles: Be honest in business, practice your religious beliefs, raise your family and repair the world. And at NRP, he has followed those principles on a path to continuing success.
