Continuing the fight

Employees at the Charles Penzone Family of Salons offer their time and talents to a multitude of charitable efforts in Central Ohio. But the effort to fight cancer has always been near the top of their priority list.

It’s part of a dedication to volunteerism that is driven by the company’s president, Debra Penzone. Her enthusiasm and energy for giving extends to each of the company’s 512 employees.

Among the biggest events are the Pretty in Pink Weekend held each October in which employees raise money for a selected breast cancer awareness fund by paying to wear pink and jeans. The event also enables a group of cancer survivors to enjoy a day of indulgences by salon professionals.

Children are the stars at the annual Mother/Daughter Day held at the Grand Salon in Dublin. The day is dedicated to girls with life-threatening illnesses and their mothers and provides a much-needed experience of pampering and special personal care that they would otherwise not receive. So on June 29, the salon closed its doors to regular guests and helped 99 honorees of the A Kid Again program enjoy the spa services, along with dinner and special activities. More than 65 volunteers provided services valued at about $19,000.

The salon firm is also a big supporter of Wigs For Kids, which provides hair replacement solutions for children affected by hair loss due to chemotherapy, alopecia, burns or other medical conditions.

But it’s not only those who are suffering from disease who receive the attention of the Charles Penzone Family of Salons.

The business works to empower women through its Dress for Success program, giving local women the tools they need to thrive at home and work. Clients of the program receive hair and cosmetic makeovers and take part in a runway show to show off their new fashion stylings.

The program is critical for economically disadvantaged women who need the support to make a good impression on those who are in a position to hire them for new jobs. It’s also yet another example of the company’s efforts to help others.
