Cut to the heart

When Tim Gase talks about low
turnover at his company, you should listen.

If you want the number in percentages,
it’s zero — as in, for two years, not one
employee has left Peerless Saw Co.

Maybe that’s because Gase and his partner, Ken Lloyd, have impressed their 51
employees with the success they’ve led the
saw company to during the last decade. Or
maybe it has something to do with the loyalty that Gase showed to his employees
in 1999 when he and Lloyd bought the
company.

At that point, Gase was president at
Peerless and found out that the historical company — it opened its doors in
Columbus’ German Village in 1931 —
was about to be sold off. Having been
loyal to the company and its employees
for four years, Gase didn’t like the uncertainty of the potential transaction.

Instead of risking his career and the
career of the people he trusted, he and
Lloyd made an offer on the company.
Though established machine and tool
companies were fighting to get their foot
in the door, Gase was able to put together enough to take control of the company. Having done so, he proudly and nervously stepped up before his company on
Sept. 17, 1999, and told his people that
he controlled the company and that its
history of family values and hard work
would continue.

In the time since, the company has
managed to increase its volume significantly while keeping staff numbers the
same.
