Doing what he does best

John Payne doesn’t like to waste
his time and efforts doing things
that don’t matter or aren’t productive.

Even as a student at the University of
Cincinnati, he got up and walked out of
a physics class because he realized
physics wasn’t for
him and that he’d be
better off studyi n g engineering.

That same approach
helps him today as
founder and president of The Payne
Firm Inc., an environmental consulting firm.

For many years, the firm performed engineering services for an
array of projects, but Payne knew
that if he wanted to achieve the kind
of consistent and sustainable growth
that he needed, then he should again
cut the fat. He refocused the firm on
just four core competencies: merger
and acquisition due diligence; ground
water and soil investigation;
Brownfield development; and litigation support.

This refocus caused the company
to lose about one-third of its business, but since doing so, the firm has
consistently grown, and Payne has
been able to focus the company on
what it does best and on better
delivering what customers want.

His efforts have been successful,
and this is evident when looking at
the wide geographic span that the
customers come from. Only about 30
percent of its business comes from a
100-mile radius of Cincinnati. The
rest comes from all across the map,
as word has spread of The Payne
Firm’s excellent service and focus
on quality work.
