Generation by generation…by generation

Scott Morey, President, The Morey Corp.

The foundation for Scott Morey’s leadership abilities at Morey Corp. stems from growing up in the company.
“I am the third generation president within my family’s company,” Morey says, “which allowed me to have witnessed fervent leadership from my father and grandfather.”
Morey was named one of the 2010 Smart Leader honorees by Smart Business and U.S. Bank. We asked him how he overcomes challenges, innovates and gives back to the community.
Give us an example of a business challenge you and/or your organization faced, as well as how you overcame it.
Our company has been scaling up to meet increased customer demand. Demand has shifted drastically for our company because we have grown 50 percent each year for the past few years. We had to be very proactive with our approach in order to effectively sustain our high quality. Morey’s history is based on top quality and will not be compromised. Morey has also been hiring additional people at the same time as not gaining financial risk with capital expansion. We recognize that our people are our greatest resource and source of strength.
In what ways are you an innovative leader, and how does your organization employ innovation to be on the leading edge?
In order to be an innovative leader, it is important to understand that what generated success before needs to be combined with ways you will generate future successes. We listen to our customers and we watch the markets closely. We gain a strong sense of “what is” to know “what will be.”
How do you make a significant impact on the community and regional economy?
Our company was honored as the Business of the Year for 2010 by the Village of Woodridge, Illinois. This notable community houses over 1,600 businesses, of which Morey has been a part of since early 2000. As a relatively small business compared to others in our markets, we understand the importance of a local presence. It is hard to obtain the track record Morey carries without first making a positive impact on the immediate front. We appreciate this award and what it stands for as a tribute to local businesses.
