Nonprofit Board Executive of the Year Award
District Judge John A. Connor has made no secret of his participation in a recovery program. It’s that honesty and perspective as an individual in recovery that has been effective in his work for Alvis Inc., which does business as Alvis House.
Nearly 90 percent of the clients whom Alvis Inc. serves are involved in the criminal justice system as a result of drug and/or alcohol addiction. Providing treatment services is one of the most important things that the agency does to help clients lead a productive life.
Alvis House provides programs and services to more than 4,000 men, women, young adults and children who have been directly affected by incarceration, and the programs impact tens of thousands more. Alvis House programs represent a research-based, integrated treatment approach designed to help clients maximize their potential for living and functioning effectively in the community.
Connor currently serves on the organization’s executive committee. He is very active in the organization and donates his time, money and talent to the agency. In addition to chairing the board, he attends virtually every committee meeting, participates in staff recognition activities and raises thousands of dollars for Alvis House.
Highlights at the agency since Connor has served as the chair of the Alvis House Board of Trustees include: agency revenue grew by nearly 50 percent from $7.3 million at the end of 2005 to $10.7 million at the end of 2008, and Alvis House expanded services for women — opening a second all-female residential treatment program.
In addition, Community Connection for Ohio Offenders, which operates programs in Columbus and Lima, became a division of Alvis House in December 2008, and Alvis House greatly expanded its youth services.
Connor has served on the board of trustees for Alvis House from April 1995 to April 2001, and then returned to the board in April 2004. He took the break because agency bylaws provide for trustees to serve a maximum of two consecutive three-year terms before they need to take at least a year’s break in service, and then they may be re-elected to the board. He also served as chair of the board of trustees from April 2005 to April 2009.
