Manufacturing money

If you’re in the metals-based manufacturing industry in Western Pennsylvania and you’re wondering where your future skilled workers will come from, a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor might provide at least part of the answer.

New Century Careers, a nonprofit, regional manufacturing career development initiative, has received a $1 million demonstration project grant from the Labor Department to provide advanced training to manufacturing workers.

According to New Century, 300 workers in a seven-county area of Southwestern Pennsylvania are expected to benefit .

The help, it seems, comes none too soon for the region’s manufacturing sector. New Century estimates that 2,000 job openings exist for tool-and-die makers, machinists, tool grinders, welders and assembly and fabrication machine operators and tenders.

The grant, which will cover about half of the project’s costs, will go toward providing sophisticated training to employees seeking career advancement through skill enhancement in the region’s metals-based manufacturing industry. How to reach: New Century Careers, (800) 227-8210
