Medicine for the defense

When Elizabeth B. Juliano founded
Litigation Management Inc., she
instilled in it the same values she lives by: respectful, responsible, resourceful.

Before she started LMI, Juliano worked as
a medical secretary at Cleveland Clinic and
as a secretary in a Cleveland law firm. When
she was working as a legal secretary, Juliano
saw that lawyers were having a difficult time
coordinating all of the information received
when defending clients in medical litigation.
Her intimate knowledge of medical terminology allowed her to analyze and summarize
large amounts of data — a very time-consuming job. To capitalize on her knowledge,
Juliano started LMI in 1984 with a $10,000
line of credit from her uncle.

The Mayfield Heights-based business has
grown since Juliano was the proprietor and
sole employee. As the company gained
clients, the work force grew as well. When litigation against Dow Corning was peaking in the early ’90s, Juliano tried again and again to
make contact with Dow’s lawyers. All she
needed was a foot in the door and her
resourcefulness made it happen. She recorded a radio-type advertisement in a friend’s
sound studio that impressed Dow’s lawyers,
and LMI had its first big client.

LMI handled 12,000 cases in four years and
grew to 115 employees. Juliano, president of
LMI, has continued to develop her employee
base. Today, LMI has 600 employees, 300 of
which work remotely from all across the
country. Of that 300, more than 60 percent
are doctors and registered nurses.

Juliano has created an environment of continuous learning at LMI and a company culture that emphasizes the importance of each
employee by highlighting the roles each
employee plays in the company’s success.

At the beginning, LMI assisted defendants
by managing the medical details of locally
filed asbestos cases. Now, LMI’s staff of medical and legal specialists distills medical
records, deciphers information and delivers
customized products and services for some
of the world’s largest tort litigation cases.
