David A. Morse has spent a good portion of his life thinking about moving.

He’s not planning on leaving Michigan, but since he was in grade school, he’s had his mind on Morse Moving & Storage, the family business. And because his mind has always been with the company, it was no surprise that immediately after high school, he joined Morse Moving, and after his father retired in 1988, he took the reins as the company’s president.

In the years since, the way he’s thought about the company has evolved. The industry has changed with the age of the Internet, and Morse has put his company on the forefront of that evolution. Today, the average person in the Detroit Metro area looking for moving services doesn’t even consider looking in the phone book, instead he or she turns directly to the Internet. In response to that, Morse uses technology to its fullest degree and has made the Web the company’s best salesman; Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Morse Moving & Storage has a goal to respond to any Internet request within 20 minutes.

That use of technology becomes just the first in a series of speedy and polite service interactions for the customer who comes to Morse Moving & Storage. With a highly disciplined service approach that includes at least 14 contacts with the customer during the moving process to ensure that everything is going as planned, Morse has been able to fight off a bad economy and fluctuating fuel prices to generate repeat and referral business to grow the company.

In addition, the company has moved into new lines of business, including corporate facilities installation and storage services. It kind of makes you wonder what Morse will think of next.
