Rachel Carson's life and legacy partly sprang from her Pittsburgh roots

Rachel Carson — credited with helping start the contemporary environmental movement — is known for writing “Silent Spring,” which warned of the dangers of misusing chemical pesticides, such as DDT. What isn’t well-known nationally is that Carson was born and raised in Springdale, Pennsylvania.
