SBA Web site for women

The U.S. Small Business Administration has launched a Web site designed o help women business owners land more government contracts.

The site, www.WomenBiz.gov, will be run jointly by the SBA’s new Office of Federal Contract Assistance for Women Business Owners, along with the Office of Women’s Business Ownership, the Interagency Committee for Women’s Business Enterprise and the National Women’s Business Council.

The Web site and office are the SBA’s response to President Clinton’s hope that women-owned businesses receive enough federal contracts — at least 5 percent — from the $200 billion worth of government contracts available.

WomenBiz.gov offers information about registering as a contractor or vendor, subcontracting to prime contractors, forecasts from federal departments and agencies, and departments and agencies that are meeting or exceeding expectations to reach more women-owned businesses. Business owners also can search the 100-plus procurement and acquisition sites, as well as follow links to other federal contractors and developers.

The women’s contracting office provides women business owners with training and technical assistance, as well as a database of information about women-owned businesses.
