Medical Mutual SHARE Award

Each year, the employees at Safelite AutoGlass set higher goals for giving, using their time, money, energy and resources to improve their community. Since Safelite moved its corporate headquarters to Columbus in 1990, the company’s employees have worked to make generosity a creative, fun and rewarding challenge, and these efforts show, earning it the Medical Mutual SHARE award.

Safelite’s employee-driven service is exemplified in employee fundraising efforts, volunteerism and the overwhelming participation of employees in company charity and service events. The Safelite human resources team helps spearhead numerous initiatives, including organizing blood drives for the company’s associates.

In 2009, human resources helped a group of employee volunteers lead the most successful blood drive in the company’s history. Not only did the team beat its goal for the Red Cross donation, but it also had 13 first-time donors participate.

Employees at Safelite are ready to go the distance when it comes to fundraising to help a worthy cause. Close to 300 employees participated in Susan G. Komen’s Columbus Race for the Cure in 2010, with the entire team wearing pink wigs on race day. The funds raised by Safelite employees are helping fund local breast cancer research, allowing Komen Columbus’ community health grant programs to reach more women who don’t have direct access to health care facilities.

Safelite also created its own triathlon for employees after the success of parent company Belron’s fundraiser in coordination with the London Triathlon. Both triathlons raised money for MaAfrika Tikkun, a South African organization that provides job training for young adults and cares for orphans and at-risk children. Because of the support from participants, guests and volunteers at both triathlons, Safelite employees raised $340,000 for MaAfrika Tikkun.

Safelite employees make helping others both challenging and fun by putting on creative events such as a “pie in the face” competition for United Way fundraising. This event let employees bid on the chance to throw a pie in the face of one of the company’s leaders, including President and CEO Tom Feeney.

Employees raised nearly one-third of the donations made by Safelite AutoGlass in 2009 of cash and in-kind value. They contributed $220,000 in 2009 for nonprofit organizations and charities throughout the United States and went on to exceed that number in 2010 fundraising.
