Sterling Jewelers Inc. takes great pride in all of its forms of community service, whether it is giving of time or resources. Through its charitable efforts, Sterling has supported some of the largest and most impactful community organizations in Northeast Ohio.
Sterling, led by President and CEO Mark Light, has become one of the largest corporate sponsors of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. To date, the company has committed to raising more than $42 million for the kids at St. Jude, and has already donated more than $26 million in just 12 years.
Sterling raises funds for St. Jude through its team member giving programs, plush sales and corporate gifts. Each year, as an incentive for its giving program, team members from the company’s store locations have a chance to win a trip to St. Jude in Memphis, Tenn., to present the check and get a tour of the hospital.
Store associates are randomly drawn to win the trip based on their level of giving and store managers are selected based on their overall store plush sales. In 2010, Sterling presented a check to St. Jude in the amount of $4.3 million.
The American Cancer Society is among the other organizations that Sterling supports. The company has supported the Westside Relay for Life event for more than 10 years. Since 1999, team members have raised more than $778,000.
In 2008, Sterling held its first on-site relay event. The idea was conceived by Sterling team members as a way to regain support and raise awareness for the cause. Sterling held the event during the workday in a reserved company lot. It was the first time any company in Ohio held this type of corporate on-site event. The results were positive, and Sterling continues to use this model as a successful way to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.
