Taking control: Focus on the positive to lead a happier life

There’s a saying that you are what you eat, but you are also what you think. If you are constantly focusing on the negative, those negative thoughts will affect your mood, making you feel bad more often than not. On the other hand, if you put effort into focusing on the positive, that will create positive feelings that lead to a positive mood.

If you find yourself spending too much time thinking about negative things or feeling down, maybe it’s time you took charge of your thoughts. It’s one thing to keep negative thoughts out of your head, but if you are not replacing them with positive thoughts, you aren’t changing anything. If you’re tired of negative thinking, take charge of your mind. Here are some tips to get you started:

Dwell on things that are positive. The more you think about them, the more you will appreciate them.

Don’t fight with unwanted thoughts. Ignore them and shift your attention to something else. Over time, the negative thoughts will diminish.

Look at the root causes of negativity. Is there something in your life that caused you to be this way? Something in your upbringing or how you were treated? Recognizing the root problem and where negativity entered your life is the first step to letting it go.

Everything in life is about perspective and seeing the glass as half full rather than half empty. Do things to help you stay positive, such as listening to uplifting music and staying active. Transform your mind toward the positive. Take time to celebrate the wins instead of thinking about how many more you need to hit your goals. Don’t get lost in financials, but focus instead on the quality of work you are producing and the good things you are doing along the way.

With the day-to-day challenges of running a business, it’s easy to get lost in what isn’t going right, but that’s the glass-half-empty approach. To truly be successful in business and life, you have to focus on the positive.

You are what you think, not just what you eat, so make sure you aren’t being eaten up by negative thinking. Take charge, because the only person in control of your mind is you.
