Fledgling entrepreneurs can take advantage of instructional programs offered either free or for a minimum fee through the Technology Access Project.
TAP, sponsored by Working Order, a non-profit business and technology incubator in Sharpsburg, is offering a series of instructional programs in areas including database management, operating systems, digital photography and Internet research.
“The workshops will meet the growing demand for job applicants and entrepreneurs to be computer literate,” says Susan Chase, Working Order’s founder.
Chase says a 1998 U.S Census Bureau study predicts that the technology industry will require 79 percent more employees than it did in 1996. Meanwhile, she adds, there is a pool of potential entrepreneurs and employees who are shut out of the technology industry because they lack access to computers and other technology. TAP is designed to overcome that barrier.
“Both the content and the design of our technology workshops will help individuals who have limited opportunities in the job market or for self-employment,” says Chase.
