Taped together

John Kahl, CEO, ShurTech Brands LLC

ShurTech Brands LLC is giving duct tape enthusiasts all over Northeast Ohio more reasons to celebrate their love of tape, with the added bonus of helping their local communities.
The company, which markets and manufactures a wide range of do-it-yourself tapes, office and houseware products, has a culture that is actively involved in supporting its local organizations, nonprofits and community programs. Under the leadership of CEO John Kahl, ShurTech uses its niche to focus its community involvement efforts on education, specifically improving the community by providing educational opportunities that better the lives of others.
In 2011, ShurTech sponsored its 11th annual Stuck at Prom Contest, a competition that awards college scholarships to national high school students by challenging them to create prom attire out of duct tape. The contest also awards money to the schools where the winning couple attends prom. To date, the company has awarded more than $140,000 to participating students and high schools. For duct tape lovers of all ages, ShurTech sponsors the Avon Heritage Duct Tape festival, an annual three-day event that provides food, fun and entertainment and a parade for community members.
ShurTech supports numerous organizations through financial contributions, including Cleveland Zoological Society, Ronald McDonald House, Second Harvest Food Bank and Junior Achievement. However, it’s 350 full-time employees also play an active role in driving the company’s community-focused culture, from volunteering as teachers for local schools through Junior Achievement, giving to bloodmobiles for the Red Cross or helping plan and run events such as the Duct Tape festival.
Helping Hands is an employee volunteer program that raises money throughout the year through fun events such as dress-down Fridays, bake sales, raffles, cornhole tournaments and hoops competitions. More than $10,000 was raised last year for the Lorain Food Bank, Cleveland Kids in Need Resource Center, the American Heart Association and other organizations.
