The best of everything

Nearly 20 years ago, Dr. Laurence Benz began his quest to provide the best possible care for his patients.

That commitment to providing outstanding customer and clinical services to each patient, along with his visionary ideas, led him to found Louisville-based KORT: Kentucky Orthopedic Rehab Team.

After completing military service, Benz began contracting with rural hospitals and nursing homes to provide therapy services. While doing so, he recognized the potential for long-term growth through the development of stand-alone outpatient clinics developed in locations convenient for patients — near their homes, places of employment and areas of recreation. Through this vision, Benz revolutionized the way physical therapy is administered.

Benz opened the doors of his first stand-alone clinic in 1987 in Glasgow, Ky. From the beginning, he was committed to providing excellent customer service and clinical excellence. All associates were required to commit to providing the best service and care to patients, and in return, Benz committed to providing the best work environment to his associates.

As KORT expanded throughout Kentucky, Benz developed the concept of WOW service, a philosophy rooted in providing patients with amazing experiences and service each and every visit.

And while all health professionals strive for clinical excellence, achieving that excellence can be elusive. Benz developed a practice of “current best evidence,” wherein similar diagnoses are treated consistently by all physical therapists in his practice. Current best evidence is backed up by the latest in medical research and technology, and takes a lot of the guesswork out of physical therapy.

Today, KORT has more than 30 clinics and employs more than 250 professionals.

“My success will be measured on the state of the profession when I retire,” Benz says. “If the profession is better than when I started, I will have been successful.”
