Ups and downs

(Downs) to RTA. Give us a break with the IntimateApparel.com fiasco. First, how could RTA blindly accept advertising without knowing what the company does? Second, its attempt to wipe the company’s Web site off the buses after a local TV station “discovered” alleged pornography on Intimate’s site was feeble, at best.

(Ups) to Innovest 2000. With more than 100 attendees, dozens of venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and supporters of business growth, the Enterprise Development Inc. conference was proof yet again that entrepreneurship is alive and well in Ohio.

(Downs) to the exodus of businesses at Shaker Square. Sure, the new owners are trying to pump a little life into the once-glorious shopping center, but sending existing merchants on their way rather than trying to blend in a bit of old with the new seems a bit drastic. This situation’s final resolution won’t play itself out until early next year. Stay tuned …

(Ups) to the Geon, M.A. Hanna planned merger. The marriage creates a $3.2 billion plastics powerhouse with expanded R&D and e-commerce opportunities. As the world’s largest polymer company, the deal spells good news for Northeast Ohio’s business community … and greater innovation within the plastics industry.

(Downs) to Century Business Services, which has been sued by the former shareholder of one of Century’s roll-up acquisitions. Century is accused of lying about its business practices and financial standing. However, with more than 142 acquisitions over the past decade, it was inevitable that somebody wouldn’t be happy.

(Ups) to the attorneys who helped broker Ohio’s $10.l billion share of the tobacco settlement. Not bad pay for 19 months worth of work. SBN’s advice: Take it while you can get it.
