Where were you born?
Where did you get your education?
What was your very first job?
I had a paper route.
Whom do you admire most in business and why?
My father. (He) was a high school graduate, he was an orphan, he basically didn’t have a very good job for a long time and decided to start his own business out of the back of a station wagon in about 1963 when I was 13 years old. We lived a pretty hard, rough life for the first 13 years, and he built up a company that anybody would be proud of. And everything that anybody wants to write, you read (Peter) Drucker, Tom Peters, anything about how to treat clients and anything about business, my father taught me all of those within his auto parts stores.
If you could be one superhero, who would you be and why?
If I could be one superhero, and I think he’s a superhero, I’d be Tiger Woods. I’d like to be able play golf like he does. I just think the fact that he, being an African-American against sort of an all-white traditional field, just being able to break through and just to see the fact that we now accept anyone because of their quality is something I think is pretty neat. That wasn’t the way it was when I was growing up in Southern Ohio in the 1950s. My kids don’t have any idea what color means, and growing up in Chicago, things like race don’t mean anything to them.
