Matt Kubancik had always had an entrepreneurial flare selling autographed baseball cards online as a child.
But when he was just 18 years old, he had an idea. In 2005, while a senior in an entrepreneurship class as Atherton High School in Louisville, he developed a project that eventually became a real business. He decided to take his entrepreneurial experience and sell items for other people online via an eBay store called The Online Outpost.
After graduation, his business rapidly evolved into Street Moda LLC, an online company that buys soft goods closeouts in quantity and sells those items to individuals on the Internet. Sales include fashion-forward shoes, jeans, hats and accessories for young adults. He buys the items at such deep discounts that he’s able to sell the items 50 to 80 percent off of the full price while other sites sell those same items at full price.
While it started operating in a residential basement, Street Moda has expanded into a large facility to provide space for all of its inventory requirements. Kubancik has served as president since the company’s inception and has also worked to build relationships with companies like Amazon and eBay to better position Street Moda to negotiate rates for selling products via those outlets. The discounted rates have led to an increased presence for Street Moda on Amazon.com and eBay and has led to increased sales of Street Moda products.
Today his company employs 37 people, continues to see its revenue grow and has a global reach, with international sales accounting for 20 to 30 percent of revenue. While he has been primarily focused on footwear since its inception, as he looks toward the future for Street Moda, Kubancik plans to expand apparel sales from to 20 to 40 percent of overall sales.
