Born: Columbus, Ohio
Education: I went to Columbus Academy for 12 years and then I went to Vanderbilt University.
First job: My very first job was planting grass and cracking concrete for my father during the summers when I was 14 years old. The first major job I had not working for my dad, believe it or not, I spent a summer working for Stanley Carpet Cleaner. I was a carpet cleaner. I was the guy with the steam engine lifting the couches and steam cleaning carpet. That was after my freshman year (of college) and I became very focused on graduating.
Whom do you admire most in business and why?
Two people I admire my father because he started with nothing and left home, came to Columbus on his own and built two great careers, one in retail and one in real estate, and I’ve always felt like his No.1 goal is to make sure that I was successful. Then I admire Warren Buffett, and not because he’s the world’s richest man but because Buffett knows what he knows and he sticks to it. No matter what’s happening in the world, he never wavers, and he knows he’s right. He goes up and down, like most economies, but at the end of the day, he’s usually correct.
If you could be one superhero, who would you be and why?
Batman. First of all, who wouldn’t want to be Bruce Wayne if that was your alias? And he’s a complicated guy who, at the end of the day, is always there for the right cause.
