Birthplace: Marshalltown, Iowa

Education: B.S. in business administration, Drake University

First job: I grew up on a farm so I worked on a farm. I think my dad had me driving a tractor when I was 12.

Greatest business challenge: The continual motivation of the associate base within the company — to keep people motivated has always been the biggest challenge. You just keep working on it.

Most important business lesson: Try to be humble and try to be balanced. And be willing to make decisions, even if they are unpopular. Anytime you are dealing with people and you’re making decisions around people, you’ll find that you won’t always have consensus. Hopefully, you can get that consensus, but if you can’t, you’re going to have to work your way toward a direction and a decision.
