Born: Columbus, Ohio
Education: Business degree, The Ohio State University
What was your very first job?
I cut lawns and I had a little landscaping company that was very lucrative at the time. I was probably 11 or 12. I mostly cut lawns. We did mulch and picked weeds. We really didn’t plant a lot of things. A buddy of mine, we kind of got into it. He kept it going for several years after I stopped doing it.
Who has been the biggest influence on who you are today?
My mother and father. I think really just being honest and hardworking, sort of the Midwestern values, was really what was distilled in me. Don’t be discouraged. You can do whatever you put your mind to.
What is the best advice you were ever given?
I had a basketball coach in eighth grade that said, ‘Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire and enthusiastically act upon will inevitably come to pass.’ I think that’s an anonymous quote from somebody. It’s stuck with me and it was from somebody I truly admire.
Whom would you like to sit down and talk to?
I’d really like to talk to my grandfather on my dad’s side, James McEwan, to really understand more about our family and our background. My son just went to school in Scotland and we took a trip over there as a family a couple years ago, so that just happens to be top of mind. My dad was born in Scotland. So I’m a first-generation American.
