Yolanda Levell-Williams is the executive director for economic development for Hillsborough Community College’s Centers for Continuing Education. Levell-Williams, who has worked for the college for five years, creates and implements educational and training services to increase the profitability and productivity of businesses. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in education.
Q. How can a company determine effective training techniques to maximize its spending?
First of all, they should develop a training plan or strategy to understand what they want to achieve out of the training. A couple of things they need to understand is what do they want to get out of this training meaning, do they want to increase the knowledge, do they want to change a behavior, do they want to change a skill or improve the morale of the employee? Those are some of the things they truly need to know prior to seeking training.
Q. How can employers decide what they should focus their training efforts on?
They need to conduct some type of an assessment or they can do a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis of their organization. This analysis will help them understand the needs of their organization in terms of training. Again, that will help the company make sure that they are actually seeking training based on that organizational need.
Q. What goes into a standardized training plan?
You need to assess different occupations. So what would go into it is the specific needs of a specific occupation within a company. Also, to understand the organization’s strategic plan or strategic initiative because we’ve got to know where the company is going in order to know how our employees are going to help the company. And, then, the other thing would certainly be any specific licensure types of training, they need to be abreast and apprised of that. Any special changes that are coming down in regards to that may impact a company; they need to be aware of that and incorporate that in their plan. They need to make sure that those employees are up to date with the latest and greatest knowledge about that, whatever they’re working on.
