What was your very first job?
A paperboy for the Lafayette Journal Courier. In fourth grade, I was at risk because I had to turn in collections for 60 people. And they didn’t care whether I collected it or not, I owed them that every week. You’re a contractor for hire. I had to do accounting and customer service. I had to deliver and be there every day. No one else delivered the papers but me. You folded them and delivered them, collected money and paid the bills. If you performed poorly, you had to eat it. If you throw it on the roof, you have to go get them a new paper.
What is the best advice you ever received?
Have a willingness to listen and then be persistent.
If you had to choose a different career, what would it be?
It probably would be teaching or coaching. There’s just great rewards in helping people learn.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie for a long time was ‘Cool Hand Luke.’ Obviously because he was a cool guy. He fought authority and wasn’t afraid to challenge it.
