Whom do you admire most in business?

I admire people that I have worked with that have helped me and taught me. That’s who I admire.

If you couldn’t have pursued the career you chose, what would you have wanted to be?

I would like to be a professional golfer because I love to play golf. I’d like to be Tiger Woods.

Parker on getting ideas from other businesses: Don’t reinvent the wheel when it doesn’t need to be reinvented. A lot of people have good ideas. It’s OK to borrow them. One thing I’ve learned is to create a simple plan, get people aligned to it and then communicate it. I’ve been in that world where people have generated the four-volume business plan that sits on somebody’s desk and never gets communicated. That’s a big mistake.

Parker on having fun: Keep things informal. Laugh at yourself a little bit. Unless you’re performing brain surgery, most businesses are fairly simple and remember that.

Fast fact: Village Pantry is an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners Inc., which in 2006 acquired the business of Imperial Company Inc., operator of 33 Next Door Store convenience stores in Michigan and northern Indiana.
