What was your first job and what did you learn from it?

The very first job I had was to be a PBX operator at a hotel. I really learned that how you treat people makes a difference. The way you talk to people when you answer the phone even makes a difference in how your interaction will be.

But the other thing I learned is that I was very gullible and naive. There were a couple of guys who worked at the hotel who would always call me and ask me to page people — and they were famous people and I didn’t know they were famous people — and I’d be paging them over the intercom system.

What’s your favorite way to relieve stress?

The best way for me is reading, but I also love to play golf — although that can be a source of stress at times.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Surround yourself with very talented people who are different from yourself.
