Education: bachelor’s degrees, economics and classical studies, Stanford University

First job: When I was eight years old I worked on boats — on my dad’s boats and his friends’ boats. Just cleaning and washing boats and windows, polishing metal and cleaning oil on the bilge.

Best business advice: People always talk about communicating down. Communicate to your subordinates, make sure they know what’s expected of them. But people sometimes forget to communicate up. You have to communicate up and make sure that whoever you’re answering to knows what you’re doing. Make sure they know the job that you’re doing, so they know you’re doing a good job, and communicate with them regularly to find out if you’re not doing the job they expect.

That’s something I’ve done since I started here. I literally came in with field experience but no project management experience. Then one guy left, and I took over five projects the next day. I had to go to him all the time and say, ‘Here’s what I’m doing; what am I missing?’ He’d go through it with me, and after a few months, he would say, ‘Did you do this?’ He got to trust me because I was forcing the communication to ensure I was doing the job right.

Favorite movie: Probably ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail.’ My daughters wanted to see it. They like it most of the time, they think parts are really funny, but other parts they don’t quite get yet. They’re 8 and 5.

If you could be a superhero, who would you be? Aquaman. I like water, I’ve always scuba dove, wakeboarded and surfed. Plus, it’s different than all the other ones. Everyone wants to be Superman.
