What has been your most difficult business challenge?
Changing perceptions on a new arena. So, changing what people thought about funding for a new arena.
We had a couple things going on. Public attitude was there should be no public funding for an arena. They were even against funding the Steelers’ stadium. So, you started there, and that was during times of government surpluses.
So, now you had a city that was on the verge of bankruptcy. Elected officials had no appetite for public funding for an arena. We had to come up with another way to fund an arena because we couldn’t afford to pay for one ourselves.
Whom do you admire most in business and why?
Ron Burkle. He is one of our owners. He has The Yucaipa Cos. I admire him and the way he was able to start off as a bagboy in a grocery store, buy a grocery chain and turn it into multiple businesses. I think what’s interesting is the way he sees around corners and also that he treats people well and still is successful.
