Education: B.A. and M.A. degrees from Duquesne University
What was your first job?
A messenger for a commercial real estate operation delivering documents and contracts throughout the city
Mikan on setting goals: Goals to me have finality to them. ‘I’ve gotten there, so I’ve arrived.’ What do you do with the sales executive that achieves his goal in August? Does that mean he coasts for the last four moths of the year?
I think what you really look at is a minimum expectation, then you grow from there. That’s really helped us out. That’s really kind of an ongoing challenge that we never really develop that ‘We’ve arrived, we’re here’ mentality. We achieved what we wanted to do because that never stops. It’s an evolution.
What profession would you want to be in if you couldn’t have your current job?
Architect or design. You see something from a blank piece of paper, you see something grow out of it, and it’s visible and tangible. You can see where you are going, and what you accomplished. (There’s) definite satisfaction of getting things to grow from scratch.
