Tortoise Capital Advisors wins with consistency

At first glance, Tortoise Capital Advisors LLC might seem like a bit of an odd name for an investment firm. But it speaks volumes about the firm’s approach to business.

Tortoise, led by co-founders and managing directors H. Kevin Birzer, Zachary Hamel, Terry Matlack, Kenneth Malvey and David Schulte, is named after the popular children’s fable, “The Tortoise and the Hare.” When the overconfident hare stops to take a nap after gaining a large lead, the tortoise wins the race by steadily making his way to the finish line.

Much like the tortoise in the fable, Tortoise Capital Advisors has persevered in the face of adversity. An example of the firm’s perseverance came during the most recent financial crisis. Tortoise formerly utilized auction rate securities as a component of its funds’ leverage. Tortoise was among the first, if not the first, movers in responding to the auction rate meltdown and began seeking to reduce exposure during the fall of 2007, prior to the auction failures of early 2008.

Tortoise’s product innovation is a testament to the independent thinking of its leadership. The careers of its founders, and their personal wealth, all faced an uncertain future when Tortoise first embarked on its journey with a master limited partnership investment plan. As a team, Tortoise’s leadership brought together a unique set of skills and

backgrounds to build a business — the concept, capital markets, portfolio management experience and institutional marketing strategy.

Through its long-only investment strategy, Tortoise has developed important relationships with issuers, underwriters and sponsors that provide competitive advantages in sourcing, evaluating and managing investment opportunities. Tortoise continues to seek new investment alternatives, most recently through the filing of its first open-end mutual fund. Tortoise also has a business development team that is fully engaged in identifying potential new opportunities, through screening criteria rooted in the underlying Tortoise fundamentals of yield, growth and quality.
