Two agencies merge to form BVU:The Center for Nonprofit Excellence

CLEVELAND/AKRON, Ohio ― The Akron-based Center for Nonprofit Excellence and Cleveland-based Business Volunteers Unlimited are now one organization known as BVU: The Center for Nonprofit Excellence, with offices in both downtown Akron and Cleveland.

The organization, led by Brian Broadbent, president and CEO, will offer services to business and nonprofits throughout the region and provide one-stop shopping for volunteer referral, consulting and training.

Services available to nonprofits, businesses and individuals in Northeast Ohio include the following:

Board Matching

Training and matching professionals to nonprofit boards based on the needs of nonprofits for particular skills and expertise and the qualifications and interests of each candidate.

Nonprofit Consulting Center

Board and Leadership Consulting: Providing nonprofit board and staff leadership with high value consulting services, including board development, succession planning and volunteer management.

Volunteer Consulting

Engaging skilled volunteers — business professionals and retirees — to provide nonprofits with substantial management and functional consulting.

Business Engagement

Partnering with businesses to develop community involvement strategies and engage employees to serve as board members, volunteer consultants and direct service volunteers.

Roger Read Resource Center

Providing nonprofit staff and board members with information, guidance and resources related to nonprofit management, governance and operations. Includes technical assistance and access to the Foundation Center’s Foundation Directory Online for grant-seekers.


Presenting highly rated seminars on best practices in nonprofit governance and management to address the ever-changing needs of the nonprofit sector.

Volunteer Center

Connecting individuals and community groups to thousands of volunteer opportunities through the Volunteer Center at BVU and United Way of Summit County.
