Journalist Advocate

Ray Marano isn’t a business journalist simply in the academic sense. The editor of SBN Magazine spent more than two decades in the retail food industry before becoming a journalist.

He has spent most of his 13-year career in journalism covering business and writing about the experiences of the entrepreneur. He joined SBN in 1996 as a staff writer, and was named editor last November.

An award-winning journalist, Marano has earned five Golden Quill Award nominations, including one first place honor, and two Keystone Awards. He began his journalism career with the Pittsburgh Business Times as an intern, and advanced to cover the health care and food industries.

Lending his expertise in business and journalism to the broadcast media, Marano serves as guest interviewer on “High Tech Pittsburgh,” an interview program broadcast on Pittsburgh public access television.

As an advocate for his profession and its future development, Marano lends his time and insight to college journalism and public relations classes as a guest lecturer, where he offers his experience and insights into the role of the business journalist. He has also served as a judge of business plans for a graduate level business class at the University of Pittsburgh.
